Dan Hunka Associate, Architectural Technologist LEED® AP Edmonton

As an architectural technologist, Dan believes that a building or space will intuitively feel right when detailing strategies support and communicate the design vision. His work consistently demonstrates a clear understanding of the design vision of a project and an ability to produce details that are sympathetic to a building’s architectural language. Dan has a reputation for excellent production documents on projects with complex requirements. He offers thoughtful, creative solutions to design challenges and leadership in coordination with all disciplines. Some of Dan’s most notable work includes the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, ECERF at the University of Alberta, the Edmonton International Airport Control and Office Tower, and Edson Healthcare Centre. Often described as a craftsman, Dan’s approachability and extensive experience in a wide variety of building types have made him a valuable resource in our Edmonton studio. Being involved in several projects at once and in different capacities allows him to share his knowledge across all sectors and disciplines, advancing our work and the industry in the process.

What’s your favourite DIALOG project?
It’s hard to pick just one favourite. I have been extremely fortunate to have worked on so many rewarding projects. It’s great to tour around Edmonton and realize how much of the city’s built environment I have been a part of.

What’s one thing about you that would surprise people?
My age. Most people can’t believe that I have adult children.

What’s one ‘pro tip’ you live by?
There is always a way to solve a design challenge, and there is always something to learn. You just have to persevere, ask a lot of questions and be creative. Many times I have struggled for hours trying to solve a problem, then I’ll go for coffee. It helps to clear your head. Ten minutes after returning to the studio I will have the solution sketched out.

I love to figure out how all aspects of a building go together. I'm happy I get to use my imagination to create simple constructible solutions to challenging design projects. The more challenging the better.
